Matt Tully is in his second year as head coach for the men’s tennis team. His coaching philosophy encourages his student-athletes to perform in practice as they would play in their competitive matches.
“I don’t agree with ‘practice makes perfect.’ Practicing hard will make you the player you want to be. If you want to improve for your matches, you need to play hard for the practices.”
Tully plans on creating a legacy for the men’s tennis program at GateWay that players and their parents would proud to be a part of. He works with his student-athletes one-on-one and helps them succeed on the court with their tennis game, as well as off the court with their studies.
Tully’s prior coaching experiences include positions as head coach at Brooke Point High School in Stafford, VA from 2002-04; head coach at Scottsdale Community College from 1995-96; and also head coach at Phoenix Country Day School from 1995-96.
As a tennis player, Tully enjoyed his success in high school and college. He played during the 1992-93 season at SCC, where he and the team as a whole went undefeated and ranked fourth at Nationals. He returned to play for the 1994-95 season, where he and the team again went undefeated and ranked seventh in Nationals. At Thunderbird High School in Phoenix, he was a regional champion in singles in 1991 and a regional champion in doubles in 1992.
After SCC, he transferred to Northern Arizona University where he received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with an emphasis in physical education and health. He is also certified in K-12 teaching.
A Phoenix native, Tully currently resides in Chandler with his wife of seven years, April; and his two daughters Breslin and Hadley. He enjoys cheering for the Arizona professional sports teams and spending time with his family.
