2007-2008

 

Highlights:

  • Women's cross country: Freshman Melissa Lyall placed 39th overall at the 2007 NJCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championship in Ina, Illinois.  With a time of 18:57.11, she ranked 6th out of the 34 women from Arizona.  Lyall earned All-American distinction.
  • Baseball: Six Geckos were selected as 2007 ACCAC Sophomore All-Stars.  Pete Alonge, Mark Appel, Tyler Baisley, Aaron Bruner, Henry Cotto and Josh Lucas participated in the All-Star game on Oct. 13 at the Peoria Sports Complex.

2006-2007

 

Highlights:

  • Men’s cross country: Alonso Contreras is named an NJCAA All-American for the second straight year and finished 10th at Nationals. The Geckos placed 9th overall at the NJCAA Division I Men’s Cross Country National Championship in El Paso, Texas.
  • Baseball: Sophomore third baseman Joe Urtuzuastegui is named to the All-ACCAC second team and sophomore LHP Beau Polvorosa finishes with the most saves in ACCAC Division II with 10 for the season.
  • Men’s golf: Sophomore Kevin Walters and freshman Bryce Bohl are named to the ACCAC All-Region team. The Geckos finish 3rd at the NJCAA Region 1 Tournament at Rio Rico in Tucson.  Freshman Justin Aragon hits a hole-in-one on March 28 at the Glendale CC Invitational, and he is also awarded a medal for a top 5 finish at the Mesa CC Invitational on April 19.
  • Softball: Freshman Alex Phillips hits the first walk-off homerun in both softball and baseball history at GateWay on February 27, 2007 against Arizona Western College.

 

2005-2006

 

Highlights:

  • Men’s cross country: Alonso Contreras is named an NJCAA All-American and finished 19th at Nationals. Craig Breinholt is also named an NJCAA All-American and finished 20th at Nationals. The Geckos finished seventh in the nation at the NJCAA National Tournament in Lawrence, Kansas.
  • Women’s cross country: Shanae Cody is named an NJCAA All-American and finished 19th at Nationals. She also finished first during a season 5k meet at Mountain View Park in Phoenix, with a finishing time of 20:03.
  • Baseball: 2005-2006 marks the first year of competition for the GateWay Geckos baseball team. The Geckos earn their first win as a program with a come-from-behind, 9-7 pre-season win over Phoenix College on February 3, 2006. The Geckos play their inaugural season game on February 14, 2006 against Arizona Western College at Gene Autry Park in Mesa. GateWay President Eugene Giovannini threw out the first pitch and GateWay Early College High School student Elisha Cheeseman sang the national anthem.
  • Men’s golf: Freshman Kevin Walters is named to the ACCAC All-Region team, ranking 5th in the region.  Sophomore Jason Bustamante hits a hole-in-one during the Mesa CC Invitational.
  • Women’s golf: Jocelyn Borden is named an NJCAA All-American.

 

2004-2005

 

Highlights:

  • Men’s cross country: The Geckos ran away with a 6th place finish at Nationals.
  • Women’s cross country: Lady Gecko runners Kylee Fay, Felicia Johnson and Marnie Snarr were named NJCAA Academic All-Americans.
  • Women’s tennis: Lady Gecko Comfort Ubadigbo was named an NJCAA Academic All-American and Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar.
  • Softball: 2004-2005 marks the addition of Lady Geckos softball to the GateWay athletic programs.

 

2003-2004

 

Highlights:

  • Women’s golf: The Lady Geckos placed 8th at the NJCAA National Tournament
  • Men’s golf: The team reaches a 10th place national ranking. So Kobayashi ranked first in the NJCAA Region 1 and was named to the NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American team with a 4.0 GPA. He also set a GateWay record for lowest score shot in a round with a 63 at Estrella Mountain Ranch Golf Course, one stroke off the course record.

 

2002-2003

 

2002-2003 marks the first academic year of athletic competition at GateWay.  The inaugural year for the Geckos saw the formation of six varsity teams: men’s and women’s cross country, golf, and tennis and one club sport – track club.  The first student-athlete to become an official GateWay Gecko was Alicia Gilleland, a cross country runner and a graduate of Camelback High School.

Highlights:

  • Women’s golf: The Lady Geckos finished a successful season placing 10th at the NJCAA National Tournament.

 

2001-2002

 

The early beginnings of the GateWay Community College Athletic Department started in 2001.  Susie Pulido was named the Athletic Director and Dan Lufkin was named the Assistant Athletic Director. They laid the department foundations by overseeing the eligibility process, tracking student athletes and helping with travel plans and arrangements.
